I’m preparing an upcoming assignment that includes the option of working with photo essays: you’ll have the opportunity to define the genre and to provide examples from your own visual explorations. As part of my gathering and organizing, I continue to be struck by the NYT article “Summer’s Over; the Game Begins.”
Planning notes:
- I think the “define the genre” angle is good for a persuasive/advocacy/argument project because as we learned together in class, there are competing and ambiguous sources on what counts as a photo essay and the role of text
- This is an opportunity to explore the research capabilities of the New York Times:
> searching “photo essay” and All Results Since 1851
> searching “photo essay” and Multimedia - “If I see a guy wearing a Superman suit, it’s very normal for me,” Mr. Dakowicz said by phone recently. “I need to remind myself that this is not very normal for other people.”
- “Love, Money and Other People’s Children”
